The Formation of Disk Galaxies

چکیده

We present a scenario for the formation of disks which explains not only the properties of normal galaxies, but the properties of the population of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBs) as well. We use a gravitationally self-consistent model for disk collapse to calculate the observable properties of disk galaxies as a function of mass and angular momentum of the initial protogalaxy. The model naturally produces both smooth, asymptotically flat rotation curves and exponential surface brightness profiles over many disk scale lengths. In this scenario, low mass and/or high angular momentum halos naturally form low baryonic surface density disks, which will tend to be low surface brightness. Theoretical and numerical calculations suggest galaxy halos should form with a wide range of mass and angular momenta, and thus, the disks which form within these halos should have a wide range of surface brightnesses and scale lengths. We use theoretical predictions for the distribution of halo masses and angular momenta to explicitly calculate the expected number density of disk galaxies as a function of central surface brightness and disk scale length. The resulting distribution is compared to the observed properties of galactic disks, and is shown to explain the range of observed disk properties, including the cutoff in the maximum disk scale length as a function of surface brightness. We also show that disk instabilities explain the observed lack of high surface density e-mail address: [email protected] Hubble Fellow Current Address: Columbia Astrophysics Lab, Mail Code 5247, 550 West 120th Street, New York, NY 10027

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Merger History of Galaxies and Disk+Bulge Formation

We discuss the transitions of galaxy morphologies within the CDM paradigm under the assumption of bulge formation in mergers and disk growth via cooling of gas and subsequent star formation. Based on the relative importance of these two competing processes it is possible to make predictions on the expected morphological mix of galaxies. In particular we here discuss the generation of massive di...

A Structural and Dynamical Study of Late-type, Edge-on Galaxies: Ii. Vertical Color Gradients and the Detection of Ubiquitous Thick Disks

We present an analysis of optical (B −R) and optical-infrared (R −Ks) color maps for 47 extremely late-type, edge-on, unwarped, bulgeless disk galaxies spanning a wide range of mass. The color maps show that the thin disks of these galaxies are embedded within a low surface brightness red envelope. This component is substantially thicker than the thin disk (a/b ∼ 4:1, vs > 8:1), extends to at l...

The Kinematics of Thick Disks in Nine External Galaxies

We present kinematic measurements of thin and thick disk components in a sample of nine edge-on galaxies. We extract stellar and ionized gas rotation curves at and above the galaxies’ midplanes using the Ca ii triplet absorption features and Hα emission lines measured with the GMOS spectrographs on Gemini North and South. For the higher mass galaxies in the sample, we fail to detect differences...

Formation of Massive Galaxies at High Redshift: Cold Streams, Clumpy Disks, and Compact Spheroids

We present a simple theoretical framework for massive galaxies at high redshift, where the main assembly and star formation occurred, and report on the first cosmological simulations that reveal clumpy disks consistent with our analysis. The evolution is governed by the interplay between smooth and clumpy cold streams, disk instability, and bulge formation. Intense, relatively smooth streams ma...

Galactic Disk Formation and the Angular Momentum Problem

Galactic disk formation requires knowledge about the initial conditions under which disk galaxies form, the boundary conditions that affect their secular evolution and the micro-physical processes that drive the multi-phase interstellar medium and regulate their star formation history. Most of these ingredients are still poorly understood. Recent high-resolution observations of young high-redsh...
